In the 1940s, a Russian scientist named Dr. Nikolai Lazarev began studying how the human body could better withstand stress, especially in extreme environments.
His research led to the discovery of certain natural substances that didn’t overstimulate or suppress bodily functions but instead helped the body adapt to various forms of stress. From this, he introduced the term “adaptogen” a word used to describe herbs and compounds that increase the body’s resistance to physical, emotional and environmental stressors; while restoring balance and function. This concept soon became central to Soviet research efforts, particularly in supporting soldiers, athletes, and cosmonauts who operated under intense physical and mental strain.
Under extreme conditions adaptogens like Siberian Ginseng (Eleuthero) were tested and used to:
- Boost physical and mental endurance.
- Improve recovery.
- Enhance focus and stress resistance.
- Prevent fatigue without harmful side effects.
For Soviet cosmonauts, adaptogens were part of a strategy to maintain health and performance in the high-stress, physically demanding environment of space. These herbs were seen as a natural way to enhance human potential not by overstimulating the body but by strengthening its ability to adapt and recover.
Adaptogens for today….
Among the most trusted adaptogens are Reishi, Ashwagandha and Siberian Ginseng (Eleuthero). Three herbs with deep roots in ancient medicine and relevance today.
Reishi: The mushroom of immortality
